● Significantly renewed frame design

• As expected, the ESCAPE R DISC has been re-released with the same frame design and molding as the R3.
  
  As explained in detail in the "2024 R3 Article," the old ESCAPE R series used a high-performance frame for a daily cross bike, and despite its low price, it was highly regarded for its ride comfort, similar to a higher-grade cross bike. However, the new R series features a more popular cross bike shape.

There are almost no changes in the geometry compared to the old R DISC, but the handle position has been slightly adjusted to a more upright position due to the frame pipe shape and component configuration.

• The front fork has also been changed from aluminum to steel. This is likely the reason why the vehicle weight is about 500g heavier than the old R DISC.
  
  While changing to steel improves durability and vibration absorption, it is a disadvantage in terms of weight.

Overall, the impression is that while the performance as a sports bicycle has been reduced, rideability and durability for everyday use have improved.

● Component configuration

 The basic specifications are a very popular Shimano (3×8 speed) setup.

 The brakes are TEKTRO hydraulic disc brakes, and the tires are 700x32c, which are slightly airier tires.

*Only the matte silver R DISC has brown sidewalls.

The hydraulic disc brakes and slightly wider tires contribute to improved safety and comfort during riding.

It's a nice touch for users that GIANT offers mudguards and kickstands specifically designed for their bikes, even if they are sold separately!

● Price (cost performance)

The ESCAPE R DISC skipped the 2024 model and the 2025 model was announced early.

Price fluctuation: [2023 model (¥93,500 tax included)] ⇒ [2023 LTD model (¥69,300 tax included)] ⇒ [2024 model] ⇒ [2025 model (¥77,000 tax included)]

Although it is more expensive than the limited edition "ESCAPE R DISC LTD", the price has been significantly reduced from the 2023 standard model.

There may be pros and cons, but similar to the R3, the strong impression is that it has been adjusted to have sufficient specifications for a daily-use cross bike rather than a high-spec cross bike, and priced to be affordable.

Looking solely at the initial cost, the GIANT ESCAPE R DISC is reasonably priced, even though its price has increased compared to the LTD series. 

However, is it a good value for money?

It's subjective, but I think the cost performance probably loses out to the RAIL DISC or RL1 (hydraulic). Compared to the "MISTRAL DISC," it feels about the same.

The reason for this is that the "RAIL DISC" and "RL1" come standard with accessories such as lights and kickstands, which are sold separately for the "R DISC." This is a significant factor.

Compared to the "MISTRAL DISC," the "MISTRAL DISC" incorporates more Shimano parts in its component configuration. This significantly reduces maintenance risks for individual parts, making the initial cost higher than the "ESCAPE R DISC."

Therefore, for those who don't need accessories (already own them, etc.) and want to keep the initial cost as low as possible, the "ESCAPE R DISC" will feel like the best value for money!

 Also, the design aspect will likely be a deciding factor. The "Matte Silver" color in this lineup is personally interesting to me.

Currently, it hasn't arrived at our store, so I can't say for sure, but from the photos, the design is appealing!

Silver can range from "luxurious silver" to "cheap silver," so I'll have to see it in person to truly judge.

2025.GIANT ESCAPE R DROP

The "ESCAPE R DROP" belongs to the unusual category of "drop bar cross bikes."

● Component configuration

The basic configuration adopts "CLARIS (2×8 speed)," which is an entry-level road bike component from Shimano.

A major difference from road bikes is that the ESCAPE R DROP uses V-brakes.

Typically, road bikes use "caliper brakes" or "disc brakes." This is because brake control is more critical on high-speed road bikes.

While V-brakes can stop effectively, speed control is a bit rougher compared to caliper brakes and the like.

The ESCAPE R DROP is still in the "cross bike category."

• In addition, the ESCAPE R DROP comes standard with sub brake levers. This model is designed for relaxed riding in an upright position rather than aggressive riding in an overly aggressive posture.

 ● Frame design

The ESCAPE R DROP frame uses the same frame as the R3 series.

Compared to popular road bikes, the ESCAPE R DROP's geometry features a longer wheelbase and head tube, putting it closer to "all-road" or "gravel road" categories within road bikes.

Of course, it's a cross bike, so it's a different category, but it feels designed to be more stable and capable of handling small bumps and gravel roads than a road bike.

● Price (cost performance)

Now, whether the ESCAPE R DROP is a cost-effective model is difficult to judge.

I'd like it to be a bit more affordable, but since there are no comparable models, if you want this type of bicycle, your only options are to choose this one or custom-build a regular cross bike with drop handlebars.

If you customize a regular cross bike with drop handlebars, the initial cost will, of course, be much higher than the ESCAPE R DROP. In that sense, the ESCAPE R DROP could be considered cheap, but...

However, the Khodaabloom KESIKI TOURING (a slightly different genre) has disc brakes and a standard kickstand for the same price as the ESCAPE R DROP.

I understand the feeling of wishing it were a little cheaper...

However, the KESIKI TOURING uses "650x47b" tires, a size derived from mountain bikes, making it an even more stability-focused model than the ESCAPE R DROP. Just because the ESCAPE R DROP offers better value, it doesn't necessarily make the KESIKI TOURING an easy choice.

Summary of the new ESCAPE R series

Similar to the 2024 ESCAPE R3 model, both the "ESCAPE R DISC" and "ESCAPE R DROP" have seen a reduction in sports bicycle performance.

However, due to recent price increases, they have reevaluated their role as "everyday cross bikes" and adjusted the specifications to be sufficient rather than overkill, thereby reducing costs to make them more affordable for users.

As mentioned above, I personally prefer the design of the new ESCAPE R series over the old one! I think it has a presence that fits well into daily life and doesn't feel out of place with casual clothes.
