We've thoroughly compared the fifth-generation "GIANT ESCAPE R3," which underwent a full model change last year (2024), and the "GIOS MISTRAL," which had its first model change since its launch this year (2025)!
Both models, which have long driven the Japanese cross bike industry, underwent a model change almost simultaneously!
With V-brake type cross bikes becoming less common these days, these models are definitely ones we want to see continue as standard cross bikes!
Differences in Frame Design and Riding Performance
●ESCAPE R3
The ESCAPE R3 frame adopts a well-balanced design, a classic for cross bikes. It performs well in a wide range of situations, from city use to slightly longer distances.◎
Conversely, since it doesn't have outstanding performance, it could be said that it might not be enough for users who don't plan to use it for a wide range of purposes, such as "only for city use" or "only for long distances."
●MISTRAL
The Mistral frame adopts a frame design that considers stop-and-go riding. It is designed for smooth starts, making it well-suited for city riding with many traffic lights.◎
On the negative side, its high center of gravity can lead to a lack of stability when carrying a lot of luggage. It can also be said that it is less suited for long-distance rides compared to the ESCAPE R3.
【Summary of Frame Performance】
If it's only for city use, MISTRAL
If you want to use it widely from daily life to holiday touring, ESCAPE R3
The basic specifications are a popular Shimano 3x8 speed.
However, for parts other than the derailleur, the adoption rate of Shimano parts is low, and the parts configuration is not considered good even among cross bikes in the same price range from other brands.
●MISTRAL
Similar to the ESCAPE R3, the Mistral also adopts the basic Shimano 3x8 speed specifications.
The Mistral's parts configuration is highly regarded for its high adoption rate of Shimano parts, even among cross bikes in the same price range from other brands.
As for wheels, you can choose between two patterns: "MISTRAL SHIMANO" if you prefer full Shimano wheels, or "MISTRAL ALEX" if you only need Shimano axles. This is a nice feature.◎
【Summary of Parts Configuration】
While there isn't a significant difference in riding performance, it is recommended to have more Shimano parts to reduce maintenance risks and cut down on long-term ownership costs.
In terms of parts configuration alone, the Mistral is a more cost-effective model.
MISTRAL SHIMANO・・・11.65kg (520 size actual measurement)
The ESCAPE R3 is lighter by 180g, but considering the size difference, the impression is that they are "almost the same." Nevertheless, both are a bit on the heavier side among cross bikes in the same price range.💦
The weight of models with rim brakes is roughly as follows: ・Less than 9kg... Comparable to a road bike ・9kg range... Lightweight cross bike ・10kg range... Average cross bike That's the general idea.
Now, let's examine which parts are heavy and whether they can be lightened through customization!
●Wheel Weight (including tires/tubes/sprockets)
ESCAPE R3 (front wheel, rear wheel)
MISTRAL SHIMANO (front wheel, rear wheel)
ESCAPE R3・・・Front 1.745kg, Rear 2.355kg (GIANT original wheels, actual measurement)
MISTRAL SHIMANO・・・Front 1.635kg, Rear 2.215kg (Shimano WH-R501, actual measurement)
These measurements were taken with the tires/tubes and sprockets still attached, but the Mistral is lighter by 250g in total for both front and rear.
As expected, even a lower-grade Shimano wheel is excellent.◎ Incidentally, the wheels on the "Mistral Alex" are one grade lower than these Shimano wheels, and their weight is closer to that of the Escape R3. *However, the Mistral Alex's hubs (axles) use Shimano components, so their rotation and durability are better.
●Frame Set Weight (with wheels/tires/tubes/sprockets removed)
ESCAPE R3
MISTRAL
ESCAPE R3・・・7.370kg (S size actual measurement)
MISTRAL・・・7.815kg (520 size actual measurement)
Ideally, we should measure only the frame set, but that would be too much trouble. So, for now, we measured it with the front and rear wheels removed.
The difference is 445g, with the ESCAPE R3 being lighter. As mentioned above, there is a size difference, but even taking that into account, the ESCAPE R3 is slightly lighter.
Compared to the Mistral, the top tube and seat stay of the ESCAPE R3 are thinner, and while it was puzzling that the complete bike weight was the same by appearance, this result is understandable!
KhodaaBloom RAIL As a side note, when we measured the KhodaaBloom Rail, which is said to be the lightest in its class, under the same conditions, it weighed 6.450kg (400 size actual measurement)... It is indeed light.
●Front Fork Weight
ESCAPE R3
MISTRAL
ESCAPE R3・・・1.23kg (actual measurement)
MISTRAL・・・1.35kg (actual measurement)
While it's natural for the Rail series frames to be lightweight, the reason for the heavier weight of the Escape R3 and Mistral is their use of steel forks.
The aluminum forks used in the Rail series weigh around 800g to 1000g, making steel forks heavier. Although steel forks offer better durability and vibration absorption, it's not fair to say that aluminum forks are inherently superior...
Also, even if the Escape R3 and Mistral could be lightened by using aluminum forks, customizing the fork is quite challenging.
【Summary of Weight】
There is almost no difference in the complete bike weight between the Escape R3 and the Mistral.
The Escape R3 frame alone is lighter, making it easier to customize for weight reduction.
While it might be a bit repetitive with what I've already mentioned, the ESCAPE R3 gives the impression of an all-rounder type, while the Mistral feels like it's specialized for daily city use.
Both models are on the heavier side among cross bikes in the same price range, but their frame designs and pipe forming are solid, so you likely won't feel the weight as much during riding.
Considering the pipe forming designed for vibration absorption to reduce strain on the body, and the frame geometry that maintains speed easily, the ESCAPE R3 seems better for long rides.
For daily life, such as commuting to work or school, the Mistral seems to be a better match.◎
Although they have these characteristics, both are cross bikes developed for daily city use, so their ease of use remains the same!
"ESCAPE R3" for cruising performance once up to speed
"ESCAPE R3" for less physical strain (vibration absorption from the ground)
"MISTRAL" for superior (longer-lasting) parts configuration
Both models have long driven the cross bike industry! And both have undergone significant model changes recently (2024-2025)!
With V-brake cross bike models gradually decreasing and prices rising due to inflation, these cross bikes are recommended as "affordable" and "optimized for Japanese city use" models!
