About ESCAPE R3 Frame Performance

The ESCAPE R3, which underwent a full model change in the 2024 model year, is now in its 5th generation.

Even though the frame molding is much simpler than the previous model, it still bears the distinctive mark of GIANT. While cost reductions were made to keep the selling price down amidst rising prices, the aluminum frame is designed with ride comfort, such as vibration absorption, in mind!

The 5th generation ESCAPE R3 is said to have much more rounded frame tubes, but even so, the top tube tapers from the head tube to the seat tube, and the down tube is molded to be quite thin in cross-section.

Compared to frames of cross bikes in the same price range, this frame is solid.

The ESCAPE R3 adopts geometry that can be described as the golden ratio for cross bikes.

It offers a sporty riding feel while also providing a comfortable riding position for urban use, making it perfect for those who want to ride a bit longer distances after buying a cross bike.

Additionally, with 4 size variations, it covers heights from 140cm to 185cm. Cross bikes that can be ridden from 140cm are quite rare!

The front fork is made of steel, with a curved offset, a specification designed with durability and vibration absorption in mind.

About ESCAPE R3 Component Configuration

The ESCAPE R3's specifications feature Shimano 3x8 speed, a popular component configuration for cross bikes.

The specs are more than sufficient for everyday urban use.

The gear ratio is also a popular specification, with a front 3-speed of 28-38-48T and a rear 8-speed of 11-32T.

Brakes are TEKTRO V-brakes, also a popular specification. Recently, many cross bikes for daily use have adopted disc brakes, so you might want to consider those as well.

The tires are 700x32c, which are a bit wider. Five to six years ago, cross bike tires were typically 28c, but now a slightly wider tire is the trend!

Even in professional road bike races, tires have been getting wider year by year, suggesting a shift in the notion that "thinner equals faster."

Incidentally, the wheel fixing on the 5th generation ESCAPE R3 has reverted to a quick-release type. For a while, it had a skewer nut specification that required tools to remove, but with the return to quick release, wheels can now be removed without tools.

The saddle is a cushioned type, suitable for everyday use.

In terms of component configuration, it has average specifications. I think it's just right for everyday city use, without being over-specced!

About Customization Pitfalls

On a personal note, I chose this ESCAPE R3 when replacing my son's (3rd grade elementary school) bicycle.

Parents with children of a similar age might relate, but don't you get worried when you have to replace a bicycle due to size limitations around middle elementary school?

When your child is around 140cm tall, they're barely too short for an adult bike, but you don't want to have to replace it again soon...

Initially, I chose the "ARX 24" from the same brand, but...

With a suitable height range of 130cm to 150cm, I gave up, thinking, "After a few years, it'll be an adult bike again." It was a cross bike with wide tires, which gave me peace of mind as a parent, but...

That's when this ESCAPE R3 came into play. Despite being an adult cross bike, it offers a rare XXS size that fits riders from 140cm!

Since it's an adult cross bike, there are plenty of customization parts! If he tries hard, he can ride it for a long time, and if he stops riding it, my wife can use it! I thought, "How ecological!" and chose it!

And so, for my beloved son, I eagerly began customizing it to his specifications!!

To conclude, customizing the XXS size became quite a "pitfall" (rabbit hole/hassle) for me.💦

【Customization Pitfalls】

The head tube length of the XXS size is shorter than popular cross bikes... Installing a slightly deeper basket resulted in the brake lever interfering with the basket...

This is a capable basket that can usually be installed on most V-brake type cross bikes, but...

To avoid that, I replaced the handlebar with a raised one. This created an even more upright riding position.💦

Next, I tried to install a rear rack since there are eyelets for it... but the rear brake got in the way and I couldn't install it... I gave up, thinking, "These are just decorative eyelets."

And since it's for a child, I chose a circular lock type. Mudguards are a necessity.

Due to the small frame, it's quite cramped. It was a struggle to fit tools into the narrow space to install it...😢

I had thought a rear rack with a top plate that could also serve as a mudguard would work, but in the end, it just became a versatile fender.

The stand was a genuine GIANT product, so installation was completed without any problems.◎

The XXS size is a rare size that accommodates riders from 140cm, but when installing popular items for convenience such as "baskets" and "mudguards," this area requires some caution.

If it were XS size or larger, it probably wouldn't be this much trouble...

The stock weight (XXS size) was 10.98kg, and after customization, it's 13.48kg, an increase of about 2.5kg. Even though it's heavier, it's still sufficiently lightweight compared to popular city bikes!

For my beloved child... I'd like to dress up the "grips," "saddle," and "tires" soon!
