Neo-Mamachari Commuter | FAIRDALE LOOK FAR STEP-THRU Custom

Just pedal as usual, without overthinking it. Yet, it feels better than usual. Perhaps such a bicycle is just right for life in Kyoto.

Fairdale, founded by BMX legend Taj Mihelich, centers its bicycle manufacturing philosophy not on speed or specs, but on "the sheer joy of riding."

The LOOK FAR STEP-THRU is a step-through commuter that embodies this philosophy. It offers the casual feel of a city bike, yet when you start pedaling, it's surprisingly light and comfortable, possessing a unique charm.

This time, we've customized the LOOK FAR STEP-THRU with our own unique perspective.

While retaining the casualness of a city bike, we've added a touch of gravel riding elements, giving it a slightly earthy, mischievous feel.

We've created a "neo-city bike" dirt commuter that makes familiar scenery look a little different.

This Fairdale commuter bike naturally combines the agility of a sports bike with the casualness of a city bike.

This model is our shop's custom version, built on a base frame with original customizations. It's a bike that can be enjoyed for everyday commutes and even rides where you feel like taking a slight detour.

What is the FAIRDALE LOOK FAR STEP-THRU?

BMX legend Taj Mihelich. It's said that his renewed appreciation for cycling began with an old city bike he found on the street.

Cruising through the city at a leisurely pace, the exhilaration he felt was similar to landing a big trick on his BMX.

The LOOK FAR STEP-THRU is the model closest to his original experience. With its step-through frame and relaxed riding position, it's a commuter bike that anyone can ride naturally and feel inspired to go anywhere.

It's a bike that doesn't chase speed or specs, but rather embraces the joy of "just riding." It truly symbolizes Fairdale's philosophy.

A Simple and Comfortable Base Model

The appeal of the LOOK FAR STEP-THRU lies in its frame design, which allows anyone to ride it easily.

The step-through frame ensures peace of mind even for those not accustomed to sports bikes. It's easy to mount and dismount, and simple to handle with stop-and-go city riding.

While the steel frame isn't particularly light, once you start riding, you'll notice a distinctly lighter feel compared to a city bike. Many people are surprised by how effortlessly it glides forward.

The shifting is a simple 8-speed setup with a single front chainring. This straightforward configuration allows you to focus solely on pedaling without complicated operations.

Furthermore, it comes standard with a chain guard, which is a practical feature that prevents your trousers from getting dirty during everyday use.

Long-reach caliper brakes and 700x40C tires. This model's characteristic ride feel offers more stability than its appearance suggests, without feeling sluggish.

Highlights of the Original Customization

The base model is simple, which means there's a lot of room for customization.

For this custom build, we aimed to balance practicality for riding in Kyoto with a touch of playfulness.

First, we fitted Panaracer GRAVELKING SS 700x43C tires. Lighter than the stock tires and with improved rolling resistance, their slightly wider profile makes it easy to ride on the gravel paths of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the dirt trails along the Kamo River.

The Gravelking SS, with its slick center, rolls well on paved roads and has a soft brown sidewall that adds to its aesthetic. It’s an excellent match for a commuter bike.

For the handlebars, we chose the SOMA Port Mann Handlebar. It creates a relaxed riding position with a significant back sweep, aiming for a superb balance that isn't excessively wide.

And for the front, we've equipped a basket. Instead of the typical WALD commuter basket, we opted for a SHOWA brand basket, which mounts lower and more neatly.

This customization aims for a "gently wild" feel, not overdone, but with a touch of individuality.

Kyoto's Streets and the LOOK FAR

Kyoto isn't a particularly large city.

However, tucked away in its narrow alleys are historic buildings and vibrant new cultural spots.

Even in places you usually pass by, a slight detour can lead to new discoveries. The LOOK FAR STEP-THRU is a bicycle that naturally encourages such small adventures.

A handlebar position that allows for leisurely riding. The sense of security provided by wider tires. The freedom to proceed even on slightly rough paths.

It's a commuter bike that makes your familiar city look a little different, just by casually pedaling off.
