The "RENEGADE series" from "JAMIS," long loved as a pioneer in gravel road bikes, underwent a full model change for the 2024 model year and continues into the 2025 model year!
It's surprising when a popular model undergoes a full model change, as it could potentially diminish its current reputation!
This significant overhaul embodies the theme of "playing more on gravel"!

RENEGADE S4 Frame Performance
One of the biggest changes from the previous model is the completely revised frame design.

While the original had a high degree of perfection and a well-balanced, all-road-like character, this new model has evolved to be more playful as a gravel road bike!

The center of gravity has been significantly lowered, the reach has been extended, and the rear center has been slightly lengthened. This results in enhanced stability and straight-line performance.

Furthermore, with a maximum tire clearance of 45c, this model is designed to be exceptionally enjoyable off-road.

The frame is made from reliable "REYNOLDS 520" chromoly tubing with double-butted construction, contributing to both lightness and durability ◎

The number of eyelets remains extensive, just like the previous model ◎

In addition to the double bottle cage mounts, there are mounts on the top tube, under the down tube, and on the fork blades...

Being able to carry luggage is truly convenient for camping, touring, and even daily city rides.
It's often difficult to carry luggage on pure road bikes... Road bikes that can serve multiple roles, including ease of use in daily life, are a privilege of gravel road bikes.

The RENEGADE is also compatible with internally routed dropper seatposts! This is useful for those who want to ride hard off-road, or for stop-and-go situations in the city.

The front fork has also been updated to accommodate 45mm tire widths. Naturally, 12mm thru-axles are used for wheel attachment.
Additionally, the fork tips feature a flip-chip design, allowing for adjustment of the fork offset by swapping components.
It's a welcome feature to be able to adjust the handling to your preference, from increasing stability for off-road courses or heavy loads, to making it quicker for more agile handling. ◎
RENEGADE S4 Component Configuration

The basic specifications include Shimano SORA (2x9 speed). While it's an entry-level road bike, the specs are more than sufficient ◎

While the previous model featured a heavier road bike-oriented gear ratio of 50-34t, this model has been renewed with a gravel-specific 46-30t setup.
Many riders rarely use the 50t outer chainring on a chromoly gravel bike, so a 46t chainring reduces front shifting and increases the number of lighter gears, which is a welcome feature for tackling any terrain.

The tires have been changed from the previous WTB RIDDLER (700x37c) to WTB NANO (700x40c). This specification is more focused on rough terrain and offers improved grip ◎

While it depends on the course and individual preference, for me, who isn't confident in bike control, having this much knob gives me peace of mind. ◎

The handlebars are "RITCHEY Baquiano Comp" with moderate flare, designed to be easy for beginners to handle with minimal quirks. ◎
Additionally, the stem is also made by RITCHEY, making for an assembly that enhances the sense of ownership!
Test Ride Impressions

As mentioned above, the RENEGADE series, which originally had a strong all-road character, has undergone a full model change.
While the previous model was designed for a wide range of uses from paved roads to gravel, the new design focuses on stability when loaded and on rough terrain.
Therefore, riding on paved roads may feel a bit sluggish... however, it definitely gives the impression of significantly improved riding stability. ◎
Furthermore, the inclusion of a flip-chip on the front fork shows consideration for paved road approaches. Being able to switch between on-road and off-road setups is a welcome feature.

Compared to the previous model, this version definitely offers more advantages when considering gravel riding as the main focus.
While versatile models can be enjoyed in many ways with a single bike, some people who want to seriously enjoy riding might find them lacking.
For those who already own a cross bike or road bike for daily use and are looking to add a gravel bike, this model offers a clear distinction and will be more enjoyable!
Summary of the 2025 JAMIS RENEGADE S4
- Updated frame design focused more on off-road performance
- Broad versatility from daily use to adventures, similar to the previous model
- Component configuration that inspires ownership while keeping initial costs down
- A model that can be customized to enhance your personal style
The concept of a chromoly gravel road bike that allows for customization and long-term use while keeping initial costs down has been carried over from the previous model.

In today's landscape where the "all-road bike" category has become established, the sporty riding style of a road bike is left to all-road bikes. JAMIS's mission, it seems, is to create a model that excels at playful gravel riding. That's the impression I got from the 2024-2025 RENEGADE models.

Although it's an update with off-road in mind, it doesn't mean it can only ride on dirt. The balance is well-maintained, and it's still a gravel road bike with a deep capacity to handle playful riding!
