The "GIOS MISTRAL DISC" cross bike has been a long-time favorite for its ease of use in the city and high reliability.
In 2025, it received its first full model change, evolving significantly in both appearance and performance!
The previous model's somewhat negative impression of being "heavy and stiff" has been dispelled, making it a more comfortable and easier-to-handle bike. Its design, which looks natural even when riding in everyday clothes, is also attractive.
In this article, we will thoroughly introduce the charms of the new MISTRAL DISC, comparing it with the old model and including our honest impressions from a test ride.

Frame design optimized for city riding

Please note that the sample images sent by the manufacturer were quite different from the actual bike 💦
We only found this out when we borrowed a test bike from the manufacturer this time, but GIOS BLUE was the traditional blue. The manufacturer's sample images show a metallic feel, but the actual bike is different.
Also, although there are no photos this time, the GRAY is said to be the same color as the old MISTRAL DISC's GRAY, not the gunmetal color shown in the sample images. *We will attach photos as soon as they are available.

The frame geometry shortened the seat tube length based on the old model. The size variations have also been reduced from 3 sizes in the old model to 2 sizes in the new model.
Head tube length & chainstay length suitable for city riding

The head tube length is long, as is typical for a cross bike, allowing for an upright riding position ◎
Geometry supporting an upright position

The BB DROP is set at a slightly higher 65mm (actual measurement) compared to cross bikes in the same price range from other companies. The chainstay length is also designed to be short, making starting from a stop smooth, a design consideration for city use ◎
Flattened tubing for improved vibration absorption
It is likely that the head tube/chainstay/seatstay/seat tube pipes are the same as those used in the previous model...

Changes were made to the "top tube" and "down tube." While the previous model used simple round pipes, the new model features flattened processing, contributing to lighter weight and improved vibration absorption.

The front fork, like the previous model, uses straight chromoly material. This can be said to be a specification that takes into account durability and vibration absorption.
The new MISTRAL DISC has updated its design and the shape of its top tube/down tube.
Although the top tube and down tube have been flattened, the riding comfort feels significantly updated!
The MISTRAL DISC had a strong impression of being "sturdy but heavy and stiff." The new MISTRAL DISC has shed that "stiff" impression, and I honestly think it has simply become more comfortable to ride!

By the way, the complete bike weighs 12.5kg (500 size, actual measurement), which is slightly lighter than the previous model, but not enough to feel a significant difference.
Highly reliable and durable component configuration
High maintainability with unified Shimano parts
There are no changes to the component configuration from the previous model, featuring a high-quality specification that incorporates many Shimano parts ◎

Parts like cranks and wheel axles, which tend to be cost-cut in cross bikes of the same price range from other brands, are also uniformly made by Shimano ◎
While being made by Shimano doesn't necessarily mean it runs lighter or better, these are reliable parts that offer long-term durability and reduce maintenance risks!
Stress-free braking power with hydraulic disc brakes

The brakes are also Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, so the braking power is more than sufficient ◎
While there are no changes to the parts configuration from the previous model, the active adoption of Shimano components is a welcome point for a daily cross bike that is used heavily every day!

Comfortable riding feel experienced during test ride
Addressing the weaknesses of the old model to achieve greater completeness

In conclusion, the new MISTRAL DISC offers improved riding comfort compared to its predecessor.
As mentioned earlier, the previous model had a strong impression of being "sturdy but heavy and stiff." My honest impression is that the "unpleasant stiffness" has been eliminated, making it simply easier to ride.

Originally, the MISTRAL DISC was a heavy cross bike to maintain its durability. However, the frame design, for example, made starting from a standstill smoother, making it a model that could be ridden comfortably in the city while maintaining durability. Therefore, I never had a negative impression of its weight.
However, because it was made with traditional round pipes, it struggled to absorb vibrations from the ground, and the unpleasant stiffness was a negative factor.
It felt like a trade-off and a compromise, where the benefit of being a long-lasting cross bike with many Shimano components was balanced against this aspect.

Although only the shaping of the "top tube" and "down tube" has been changed this time, I feel that the unpleasant stiffness has disappeared and the riding comfort has greatly improved ◎
Simple design that matches city riding

While I wouldn't say it's become faster, I think it's been a pretty good update for a cross bike that's used daily in the city!

While the Mistral Disc features a 3x8 speed, which might seem high-spec, simplifying the front gears is a current trend. This is popular because it reduces mechanical issues and alleviates stress during rides ◎
Not having to worry about "cross-chaining" (using combinations like inner front and top rear, or outer front and low rear) is a simple advantage for beginner riders as well ◎
