Diagonale Frame Design

The Diagonale's frame uses 4130 chromoly tubing with double-butted construction. This results in a frame with excellent durability and vibration absorption.

Diagonale Parts Configuration (Specs)

The basic specs feature SHIMANO Claris (2x8 speed).

Despite being a sportif, it features modern specifications like integrated brake/shift levers for improved riding performance.

The crankset features a compact 46-30T gear, a configuration mindful of Japan's mountainous terrain where long rides inevitably encounter climbs. The inclusion of a bash guard makes it well-suited for everyday use.

Furthermore, the crankset is from ARAYA's original "Touring Classics" series of components, which seems to pair well with the Diagonale's design.

Incidentally, I believe the Touring Classics series was created through collaborations with various parts manufacturers to produce parts that meet ARAYA's ideals!

It features Mars-shaped drop handlebars. The saddle is a highly cushioned model, suitable for long rides.

Both are from the Touring Classics series, and their design complements the Diagonale well.

The tires are 700x32c, striking a good balance between air volume and nimble performance. The side walls are the so-called "ame-kuro" (amber/black) tires, reminiscent of an older style.

And, the wheels use silver-based aluminum rims. The hubs are made by SHIMANO to minimize breakdown risk, while the rims are from the Touring Classics series.

As an aside... ARAYA's official website refers to them as "cantilever brakes," and I was touched by their attention to detail.

Cantilever brakes offer less stopping power compared to modern brake standards, so if you're planning long rides, consider an upgrade! It might be a bit challenging to improve functionality while maintaining the design aesthetic, but it's worth it.

Equipped with sub-brake levers reminiscent of safety levers as standard. While sub-brake levers are often perceived as being for beginners, they are a valuable component for long-distance/long-term riders.

The parts configuration is a well-balanced blend of design and operability, mixing ARAYA's original "Touring Classics" components in a classical silver tone with modern SHIMANO components that prioritize durability, maintainability, and operability.

Impressions of the Diagonale Test Ride

Indeed, unlike road bikes, this sportif's ride quality makes you feel like you can "ride for a long time" rather than "ride fast."

While it may be inferior to a road bike, it offers a nimble feel characteristic of a sports bike, combined with a cushioned ride.

Above all, the sense of security provided by the mudguards... and the ability to approach cargo carrying, which is difficult with road bikes! Excellent practicality!

Its performance is perfect for daily city use and leisurely long-distance cycling. As a drop-handle model available for just over 100,000 yen, it offers excellent value for money.

These days, ARAYA's traditional sportif from a Japanese brand seems to be a good match in terms of performance for users who want a cost-effective road bike.

It's worth noting that the braking power could be upgraded later, but that's a minor detail.
