AIに任せる自転車選びはアリ?2026年人気エントリーグラベルを検証してみた

Is relying on AI for bicycle selection a good idea? We examined popular entry-level gravel bikes for 2026.

This time, I asked AI to select the most popular entry-level gravel road bikes for 2026 and then, from a professional perspective, verified whether they were truly recommendable.

I presented conditions such as price range, ease of use, popularity, and availability, and the AI produced four models. Some of the results were understandable, while others made me exclaim, "What kind of choice is that?!"

How useful can AI truly be? And what perspectives are truly necessary when choosing a bicycle? Based on actual models, I will delve into each one.

AI has already become widespread in search and work environments. But can it also serve as a "judgment tool" for choosing bicycles?

This time, I asked AI to select entry-level gravel bikes for 2026 based on the following conditions:

・The price range should be affordable for a "first gravel bike."
(Emphasis on realistic options, not immediately high-end.)

・The design should be easy for beginners to handle.
(The model should be capable of both daily use and light gravel riding.)

・It should have gained a certain level of popularity and evaluation in the market.
(Not just a spec comparison, but a model that is actually being chosen.)

・It should be actually available as a 2026 model.
(A model that can actually be purchased, not just a catalog existence.)

I deliberately avoided extreme conditions and focused on criteria that "someone genuinely considering buying now" would realistically look for.

Model ①|MARIN NICASIO (2026)

【Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price】¥132,000 (incl. tax)
【Colors (2 total)】Gloss Black / Silver, Gloss Bone / Grey
【Sizes (Approximate height guide)】50 (155-163cm), 52 (160-168cm), 54 (168-175cm), 56 (175-183cm)

AI's Reason for Selection

The MARIN NICASIO (2026 model) is a very well-balanced entry-level gravel bike.

Firstly, the price range is realistic and falls within an easily considered range for a first gravel bike. With a chromoly frame, it offers high vibration absorption from the road surface, making it broadly suitable for paved roads to light unpaved roads.

In addition, its geometry is not excessively aggressive, ensuring a comfortable position for beginners. It has a wide range of uses, from city riding to touring, and can be evaluated as a model that balances daily life and gravel riding.

Furthermore, it has a proven track record as a series and high market popularity, making it a reliable choice for entry-level riders.

Staff Comment

What it's saying is correct, and honestly, my impression is "I completely agree."

With its low center of gravity design and slightly heavy frame, it's probably not the type of model that zips along like a road bike.

However, it offers excellent stability and control, and it's built to be durable. In terms of being able to handle everything from city riding to unpaved roads with confidence, it is undoubtedly an excellent entry point to gravel biking.

Additionally, the double chainring setup allows riders to comfortably tackle climbs on rough terrain using lighter gears. The sense of accomplishment from "making it up the climb" is also a significant appeal for beginners.

Therefore, it was a good answer. (〇)

Model ②|KONA ROVE AL 700 (2026)

【Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price】¥116,600 (incl. tax)
【Colors (2 total)】Bark w/ black decal
【Sizes (Approximate height guide)】48 (158-163cm), 50 (163-168cm), 52 (168-173cm), 54 (173-178cm), 56 (178-183cm)

AI's Reason for Selection

The KONA ROVE AL 700 (2026 model) is a model that balances ease of handling with nimble riding performance as an entry-level gravel bike.

By adopting an aluminum frame, the bike's weight is reduced, excelling in acceleration and cruising performance on paved roads. Its versatility, allowing for commuting and daily use while also enabling light gravel rides on weekends, is highly commendable.

Furthermore, given the reliability of the Kona brand and its proven track record, it is a reassuring choice for a first gravel bike. The price range is also accessible for entry-level riders, making it a suitable model for users who prioritize "lightness" and "ease of use."

Staff Comment

The reasons cited by AI are, frankly, accurate. Price range, ease of use, and brand track record – it accurately covers the "must-have conditions" for an entry-level gravel bike.

KONA, as a brand, has always distanced itself somewhat from race-centric philosophies, valuing the joy of "bicycle life." In fact, many staff members at Eirin Marutamachi Store have owned a KONA bike at some point, which shows how naturally appealing the brand is. That atmosphere is strongly reflected in the ROVE series.

The ROVE AL 700 uses lightweight 6061 butted aluminum but isn't overly aggressive in its design. By equipping it with 700x40C MAXXIS RAMBLER tires, it rolls smoothly on paved roads and offers solid grip on gravel, striking a good balance. Different from the stability of 650B, the 700C specification is a perfect fit for those who "mostly ride on-road, with occasional gravel."

The Claris 2x8 speed groupset, while not flashy, is practical. With a gear ratio of 1.00, climbing even with luggage is not difficult. It offers just the right practicality to connect daily commutes with longer trips without strain.

AI's characterization of this model as a "nimble, easy-to-handle, all-rounder" is not incorrect. However, from a practical perspective, the charm of this bike is its "non-committal nature regarding use." It allows you to transition from city to trails without overthinking it. The ample room for flexibility is, I believe, the true essence of the ROVE AL.

Therefore, for a KONA enthusiast, it was an excellent answer. (◎)

Model ③|NESTO KING GAVEL (2026)

NESTO Gravel Road King Gavel Clearance Sale

【Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price】¥207,900 (incl. tax)
【Colors (1 total)】Platinum Silver / Black Gradation
【Sizes (Approximate height guide)】470mm (155-165cm), 500mm (165-175cm), 530mm (175-185cm)

AI's Reason for Selection

NESTO Gravel Road King Gavel Clearance Sale

The NESTO KING GAVEL (2026 model) is an entry-level gravel bike with an excellent balance of price and features.

With sizing unique to a domestic brand and an easy-to-handle design, it's a reassuring choice for first-time sports bike riders. Its versatility, equipped with disc brakes and capable of handling a wide range of surfaces from paved roads to light unpaved roads, is also a commendable point.

Given its market popularity and high cost-performance, it is a strong option for entry-level users who are thinking, "I want to start with this."

Staff Comment

Honestly, the evaluation of the KING GAVEL as having "good cost-performance as an entry-level gravel bike" is something I find hard to accept at face value.

First, the list price is over 200,000 yen. Considering the use of older GRX and an aluminum frame (with a carbon fork), it's hard to say it's "exceptionally good value" as a current model, and I feel the price point is difficult for a first gravel road bike.

However, that doesn't mean it lacks appeal. Given Japan's predominantly paved road environment, the KING GAVEL's design philosophy and emphasis on durability in its component selection reflect "high quality typical of a Japanese brand." It's a serious and practical bike that's robust enough to handle rough treatment.

Regarding the price, because there haven't been significant specification changes since its release, its impression can change dramatically if sales or other favorable conditions arise. If you can get it at a bargain, it's perfectly suitable as an entry-level grade—that's how I, from a practical perspective, would view it.

After receiving this answer, I momentarily thought, "Hmm?" But if it also knew about current market conditions, then it's a clever answer! (💦)

Model ④|KhodaaBloom STRAUSS DISC (2026)

khodaabloom strauss disc 105

【Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price】¥264,000 (incl. tax)
【Colors (1 total)】Dark Blue
【Sizes (Approximate height guide)】430mm (155-170cm), 465mm (165-175cm), 500mm (170-190cm)

AI's Reason for Selection

The KhodaaBloom STRAUSS DISC is a model that achieves a high level of both lightness and stability as an entry-level bike. It features an aluminum frame and disc brakes, offering efficient riding performance inherited from road bikes while providing reliable stopping power.

Furthermore, its adoption as a MAVIC neutral bike was also a factor in its evaluation for its completeness and high reliability. Based on its price range, spec balance, and brand track record, it was selected as a "high-quality model easily considered by entry-level riders."

――However.

This model is not strictly "gravel-specific" in design. Its design philosophy leans towards road bikes, emphasizing efficiency and nimbleness on paved roads.

Data-wise, it meets conditions such as disc brakes, stability, and price range, making it evaluable as a versatile entry-level model. However, considering tire clearance, geometry, and intended use, it is more of an on-road oriented model than an off-road dominant one.

From a practical perspective, the STRAUSS DISC is an ideal bike for "those who want to enjoy road biking with confidence." It can be said to be a bridge between road and gravel, rather than solely a gravel bike.

Staff Comment

The moment I read the AI's comment, honestly, my mind was filled with "?????????"

First, this is not a gravel bike; it's more of a pure road bike. It's the exact opposite of the theme of this project. And, at a list price of ¥264,000 (including tax) for the 105 class, it's not a realistic price range for a first bike.

Furthermore, it has been discontinued and is difficult to obtain. It completely fails the availability condition.

Looking back at the conditions I presented, frankly, I feel it "missed every single one."

However, I interpret this as AI's "charm." It's somewhat endearing how it occasionally shows its clumsy side.

That's why I can say: at this stage, don't take AI's suggestions at face value. While it's good at organizing information, it's not perfect when it comes to context, market conditions, or availability.

Ultimately, bicycle selection is something that needs to be judged by human eyes and experience, and this answer reminded me of that once again.

Summary|Can AI provide the answer?

  • AI selects models based on price, popularity, and spec balance.
  • Even if it's "correct" based on data, it may not fully grasp usage or design philosophy.
  • There are models, like the MARIN NICASIO and ROVE AL, that align with practical experience.
  • Selections like KING GAVEL and STRAUSS may fall outside the given conditions.
  • The final decision should be made by a person, based on "what they want to do."

Through this verification, I realized that AI excels at "averaging results." It is highly proficient at organizing information like price, evaluation, and spec balance.

However, bicycle selection doesn't end there. What kind of roads will you ride? How do you want to use it? How do you want to feel when you ride it? AI cannot yet read these "nuances."

In the first place, opinions often differ even among shop staff regarding which models are best for beginners. As I experienced this time, there were results that surprised me with "What kind of choice is that!?", and selections that clearly went in a different direction from my own thinking.

By the way, my feelings this time were: "① Yeah, I agree (agreement)," "② Good choice! (surprise)," "③ Huh? (Why?)," and "④ ????" (My score was 75 out of 100 points).

At the same time, I also got the impression that if I added more specific conditions, it might provide more focused suggestions. AI might be the kind of entity that gives vague answers if asked vaguely, and specific answers if asked specifically.

That's why it's important to use AI as a convenient reference, but make the final decision based on your own will. And if possible, I hope you'll actually touch, talk about, and confirm it for yourself.

Finally, there's one thing I want to ask AI. If I were to provide the exact same conditions using a different account—would it choose the same four models? (Since I used my usual account, I wonder if it picked up on my preferences?)

AI's Reply

In conclusion, the result would not necessarily be the same.

AI does not pull answers from a fixed list of correct solutions but generates the "most plausible suggestions" based on the given conditions and context. If there are ambiguous parts, such as the interpretation of price range, the definition of "popularity," or how the word "gravel" is understood, the selection results will vary more widely.

In other words, the more abstract the conditions, the more the answers tend to fluctuate; conversely, the more specifically the conditions are narrowed down, the more the suggestions tend to converge.

This verification clearly showed that characteristic. AI excels at finding an average, but it cannot fully grasp aspects like "how far you want to ride" or "what philosophy guides your choice."

That's why AI's suggestions are merely one source of reference. The final decision on a bike comes down to your own goals, values, and the feelings you get from actual experience.

In other words, if you, the reader, ask AI, you might get completely different answers.

The rabbit hole of bicycle selection continues!
