💬 STAFF REVIEW

With its roll-top closure and large mesh pocket, the RASCAL follows the classic design of an ultralight backpack. Look more closely, however, and you will find the thoughtful details that make RawLow Mountain Works gear stand out.

The secret behind the RASCAL’s highly adjustable 37-48L capacity is its unusual dual-zip roll-top opening. With the zippers fully closed, the pack can even be used without rolling down the top.

Unlike many large backpacks, the RASCAL remains easy to manage whether you are carrying a full load or only a small amount of gear. This ability to adapt naturally to such a wide range of trips is one of its greatest strengths.

RawLow Mountain Works RASCAL|An Adjustable-Capacity UL Backpack Balancing Low Weight and Dependable Support

More than simply lightweight. A large UL backpack designed for years of dependable use in the mountains.

Whether you are traveling light for a fast hike or carrying a full overnight load on a multi-day trek, the RawLow Mountain Works RASCAL adapts naturally to different styles of mountain travel.

Its distinctive roll-top and dual-zip construction allows the capacity to be adjusted from approximately 35L to 48L according to the amount of gear being carried. While retaining the light and agile feel of an ultralight pack, it also provides stable and comfortable support for loads of approximately 10-15kg.

Practical storage includes a large stretch-mesh front pocket and deep side pockets designed around the needs of real trips in the mountains. Rather than pursuing low weight alone, the RASCAL reflects the RawLow Mountain Works approach of creating equipment that remains reliable and comfortable over years of use.

From multi-day tent-based trekking to four-season mountain trips, it is a versatile backpack designed to grow with your equipment, experience and adventures.

The RASCAL has the light and agile feel expected from a UL backpack, but what stands out most is the reassurance it provides once fully loaded.

One of its most appealing qualities is how well it performs even when carrying less gear. Large backpacks can sometimes feel awkward when only partially packed, but the roll-top and dual-zip construction allow the volume to be reduced naturally and securely.

The side pockets and front pocket are not designed for minimum weight alone. Their strength, shape and accessibility have all been carefully considered for practical use in the mountains. The entire pack feels developed around the idea of remaining useful and dependable over many seasons.

It is an excellent choice for extended trekking and overnight trips, while also being approachable enough to recommend as a first large backpack for anyone beginning to explore more serious mountain adventures.

  • Released in 2023, the RASCAL is the largest-capacity backpack in the RLMW lineup, designed for multi-day trekking with a full tent-based load of approximately 45L or more.
The combination of a zippered opening and roll-top closure allows the capacity to be adjusted significantly according to your load.

Simple, High-Capacity External Pockets

  • The RASCAL was developed with particular attention to ease of packing and the practicality of its external pockets.

The large stretch-mesh front pocket has a generous gusset, providing plenty of space for bulky equipment.

Depending on the model and size, it can accommodate snowshoes, traditional Japanese wakan snowshoes, a shovel and similar gear. A drainage hole is built into the bottom of the pocket. The water-resistant zippered accessory pocket is intentionally kept shallow at approximately 20cm deep, making smaller items easier to reach even when the main compartment is fully packed.

The large side pockets can hold bottles as well as bulkier items such as a shelter or packraft paddle. Drainage holes are also included.

A Firm, Stable Carrying Feel

  • Every hiker has a different body shape and build.

The RASCAL was designed with a wide adjustment range to make it easier to achieve a comfortable fit for as many users as possible.

Its firmer, more supportive carrying feel was developed specifically for multi-day trekking with camping equipment. The benefits become especially noticeable once the pack is fully loaded and taken into the field.

A significant amount of development time was devoted to refining the load-lifter adjustment range, the flexible angle of the harness attachment, the harness dimensions and the internal padding, all with the aim of minimizing the perceived weight of the load.

RawLow Mountain Works / RASCAL

  • The back padding, harness pattern and internal support materials were redesigned for long hikes and multi-day trekking with packing weights of up to approximately 15kg. As a result, the RASCAL has a firmer and more supportive carrying feel than previous RLMW backpacks.

The carefully balanced combination of low weight and durability that defines RLMW remains unchanged.

The external pockets were developed with close attention to packing efficiency, accessibility and proportion. This makes the RASCAL suitable not only for intermediate and experienced hikers, but also as a first large backpack for those beginning overnight tent-based trekking.

After approximately a year and a half of field testing, the RASCAL was completed as a four-season backpack capable of use even in severe winter conditions.
  • The greatest strength of the RASCAL is its versatile and easily adjustable capacity.

It can accommodate a wide range of trips, from mountain-hut stays to fully equipped tent-based trekking. It also provides extra room when you need to carry additional food or equipment.

The back panel is designed with a relatively wide profile and uses a broad pad with moderate firmness, providing excellent stability while hiking.

Although the pack is primarily designed for shoulder-based load carrying, the harness is shaped to distribute weight as evenly as possible.

We recommend trying the backpack with a realistic packing weight of approximately 10kg to properly assess its fit and carrying comfort.
