A Simple Electric Cross Bike That's Easy to Handle

Simple Operation with No Gears

A key feature of the URBAN BELT 650 is its simple, intuitive operation.

It intentionally omits gears, offering only three assist levels. This straightforward setup ensures that even first-time electric bike users can ride without confusion.

Riding Feel Unique to a Single-Speed Gear

On the other hand, from a sports bike perspective, it has some distinctive specifications.
Since it's a single-speed, there are no heavy gears, and as you pick up speed, you might feel like the pedals are spinning idly.

It's designed not so much for speed, but to make urban commuting comfortable.
In that sense, it's a model that feels more like an urban mobility solution than a "cross bike."

Comfort of 650B Tires and Belt Drive

650B Tires Suitable for City Riding

The adoption of chunky 650B (27.5-inch) tires gently absorbs vibrations from uneven city pavements.
Offering a stable ride, it ensures a secure and comfortable experience for daily city commutes.

Belt Drive, A Rarity in Japan

The drive system employs a belt drive.
It eliminates the need for lubrication like chains, so there's no worry about oil stains.

The quiet and smooth ride is very compatible with city use, making it easy to handle for commuting and daily travel.

Belt-drive bicycles are still a rarity in Japan.
BRIDGESTONE is one of the few brands that actively promotes them in Japan; they are rarely seen from other brands.

Among them, WIMO can be said to be a rare brand that actively adopts belt drives.

Reasons Why I Recommend Belt Drives

Personally, I highly recommend belt drives for urban bike use.
Unlike chains, there is almost no rust or stretching, and regular adjustments are greatly reduced.

Actually, I'm quite sensitive to strange noises while cycling, and I'm the type who thoroughly investigates and fixes the cause once rattling starts.
Of course, as a bike shop staff member, I can do the work myself, but it's still a hassle.

In that regard, belt drives inherently have fewer sources of noise or problems.
Even just reducing maintenance effort is reason enough to value them, in my opinion.

Of course, from a sports bike perspective, there are disadvantages, and they cannot be adopted for all bicycles.
Nevertheless, for everyday use bicycles, I believe it's a mechanism that should be more widely adopted in Japan.

Electric Performance and Lightness

Quite Light for an Electric Assist Bike, Weighing Around 15kg

The URBAN BELT 650, despite being an electric cross bike, weighs approximately 15.3kg. This places it in a considerably lightweight category for electric assist bicycles.

Even when ridden with the assist turned off, it doesn't feel entirely heavy, giving a sensation that is lighter than a utility bike but slightly heavier than a cross bike.

It gives the impression that even if the battery runs out during daily use, you could still ride it home without much difficulty.

Powerful Electric Assist

The assist performance is solid, especially in Mode 3 (high mode), where the initial boost of power is quite strong.
It feels like it propels you forward more significantly than the high mode of a typical light electric assist bike, which might surprise those unfamiliar with electric bikes at first.

For daily use, many people would likely find Mode 2 sufficient.

Simple Design with Room for Customization

Simple Design That Doesn't Look Electric

The design of the URBAN BELT 650 has a slightly different impression from typical electric assist bicycles.

Normally, electric assist bicycles tend to look bulky due to the strong presence of the motor and battery.
However, this URBAN BELT 650 has a very simple and cohesive appearance.

The manufacturer describes it as "retro," but personally, I don't find it to be particularly classic.
Instead, it has a more simple and urban feel, like a city bike.

Urban Bike Design That Suits the City

The rounded frame tubes and the plump, wide 650B tires are well-balanced,
creating a simple and casual look.

It's not a design that's a mix of a popular cross bike and an electric utility bike.

Rather, it gives the impression of an urban bike designed as a mode of transport for city living.

It's a design that seamlessly blends into a relaxed city lifestyle, like commuting to a cafe in the heart of the city. I believe it embodies a "slow city life."

Design with Room for Customization

Furthermore, since it's a simple base model, it leaves room for customization.

You can change the handlebars, adjust the stem to fit your body, and there are bolt mounts for attaching baskets, carriers, and fenders.

It's a fun bike to gradually customize for daily use.

Summary | Electric Cross Bike as Urban Mobility

The WIMO URBAN BELT 650 is an electric cross bike with a stronger character as an urban mobility solution than a sports bike.

  • Simple operation with no gears and only 3 assist levels
  • Easy maintenance with belt drive
  • Lightweight frame (approx. 15kg) for an electric assist bike
  • 650B fat tires for comfortable city riding
  • Simple design with room for customization

As an electric bicycle designed to make daily commuting comfortable, it is very easy to handle.
It's a model whose appeal is better understood when considered as an urban bike that complements city life, rather than a "sports bike."
