[The Evolution of City Cross Bikes] GIOS ARIES 2026 | Comfortable & Safe Ride with Fat Tires x Hydraulic Discs!

"GIOS ARIES" is a capable model specializing in city riding!

Equipped with thick 38c tires and hydraulic disc brakes as standard, its attractive design makes it easy to handle even for first-time sports bike riders.

While using the same frame as the classic GIOS "MISTRAL", this new proposal refines comfort with a wide gear ratio and an upright riding posture.

This article provides a detailed explanation of the GIOS ARIES, covering its frame design, equipment, and a test ride impression.

By the way... I used to read ARIES as "Arīzu" because it was spelled as ARIES, but since it's spelled "Ariesu" on the official GIOS Instagram, "Ariesu" must be correct. Saint Seiya also calls him Aries, so I don't think there's any mistake there 💦

GIOS ARIES Charm ①: Newly designed aluminum frame for enhanced comfort

The completely new model "ARIES" is an aluminum cross bike with a different design from previous GIOS models.

The design, which used to emphasize the manufacturer's logo, has been completely revamped into a simpler design that pairs well with "everyday clothes + city".

OPAL WHITE also looks simple and nice ◎

It may be hard to tell from the photos, but it's not "pure white" so much as a color where blue-grey is subtly mixed in to tone down the contrast, giving it an elegant impression ◎

Frame Geometry

Applicable Height 165-180cm 175-185cm

Compared to popular cross bikes, the geometry features a longer head tube, a shorter chainstay, and a higher bottom bracket position (measured BB DROP of 65mm).

The frame uses the same one as GIOS's classic cross bike, the "MISTRAL DISC."

Upright riding posture for improved maneuverability

With a longer head tube, the design allows for an upright position and easy handlebar operation.

Also, the shorter chainstay length and higher BB position contribute to smooth starts.

These features allow for smooth starts from traffic lights, making it a design well-suited for urban use.

On the other hand, it doesn't seem to be good at maintaining high speeds. Since there are few opportunities to maintain speed in the city, it's not a disadvantage, but if you're planning long-distance cycling, you might want to consider a different model.

Also, due to the short chainstay length, it might be difficult to attach a kickstand. Since the tires are on the thicker side, a kickstand would have been a nice addition for carrying cargo.

Regarding the number of bolt mounts, it's about the same as popular cross bikes. It has enough for attaching baskets, mudguards, rear carriers, etc.

The rear brake cable is routed along the top tube. While there are no particular performance disadvantages, it seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it look.

With cable routing, internal routing is becoming more common, so this feels like it's going against the trend. However, there's a niche group of people who actually prefer this, so it's a difficult choice 💦

For gravel bikes, where you might have to carry the bike, routing the cable along the top tube is more rational!

Chromoly fork balances comfort and durability

The front fork uses straight chromoly material. While it adds weight compared to an aluminum frame, it improves durability and vibration absorption. This specification prioritizes comfort over top speed ◎

The straight shape also contributes to responsiveness, which is a welcome point ◎

By the way, the complete bike weight (actual measurement for 500 size) was 12.55kg. The manufacturer's stated weight is 12.2kg, but if that's for the 450mm size, then it's within expectations.

Compared to cross bikes in the same price range, it feels slightly heavier. This is likely due to the design prioritizing durability with thicker tires.

GIOS ARIES Charm ②: Features and tire specifications perfect for city riding

Reliable specifications with many SHIMANO parts

This cross bike features hydraulic disc brakes, which are a current trend.

For the number of gears, it uses a front single - rear 8-speed, a simple specification that reduces mechanical problems.

It also features the new SHIMANO ESSA, making it a highly anticipated component.

The gear ratio uses a front 40T and rear 11-45T. A 45T rear cassette is quite large... This gear ratio provides peace of mind even on steep climbs.

38C tires & Tubeless-ready rims

It features good-looking 700x38c brown sidewall tires. The tread pattern is also an easy-to-handle model focused on city use.

The rims are ALEXRIMS tubeless-ready aluminum rims. With 32 spokes, they also boast excellent load capacity ◎

The hubs are made by SHIMANO, which is a welcome point for a cross bike in this price range. Their excellent durability means they can be used for a long time.

For tire clearance, the stock 38c felt just right. Up to about 40c seems fine.

I experimentally tried fitting a Road Plus (650x47b), and while it was barely rideable, I wouldn't recommend it. Personally, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a Road Plus variation available 😢

Comfortable cushioned saddle is great for beginners ◎

The saddle is quite cushioned, even for a cross bike. This means less strain on your backside!

GIOS ARIES Charm ③: Comfort and stability that you can feel when riding it

Smooth acceleration and comfortable cushioning

Despite the appearance of thick tires, the acceleration is quite smooth ◎

There's no feeling of having to "heave-ho" to get going; it simply glides forward, which is a big plus!

Thanks to the highly cushioned saddle and tires, there is less strain on the hips and hands, giving the impression that even those new to sports bikes can ride comfortably.

Upright position ideal for city riding

The handlebars are also high, so there's no excessive forward lean, and less strain on the lower back ◎

However, perhaps due to the weight of the bike and the thickness of the tires, there is a feeling of deceleration. Therefore, it's probably not good at maintaining high speeds over long distances.

Design philosophy prioritizing comfort over speed maintenance

・Smooth acceleration despite its appearance
・Comfortable ride thanks to highly cushioned saddle and tires
・Upright position provides high maneuverability
・Not ideal for maintaining speed over long distances due to a feeling of deceleration

The ride quality isn't like a gravel bike meant for tackling rough terrain; rather, it's a model designed for relaxed cruising in the city, taking into account stop-and-go traffic.

Its high cushioning ensures comfort even on bumpy asphalt, and the thick tires provide good grip for safe riding even in bad weather.

A stress-free cross bike is the perfect description.

Summary | GIOS ARIES: A new standard for "comfortable city riding"

  • Smooth acceleration optimized for city stop-and-go traffic
  • Enhanced cushioning with saddle and tires for a comfortable ride
  • High handlebar position for excellent maneuverability
  • High-quality specifications with many Shimano parts
  • Not ideal for maintaining speed over long distances

The new model "ARIES" has a slightly different concept from popular cross bikes.

While evoking the image of popular gravel cross bikes, it is a cross bike that is easy to handle in the city, focusing on daily use.

Its high cushioning, upright riding position, and smooth acceleration make it a feature that lowers the barrier for first-time cross bike users!

This model is perfect for users who want to enjoy a cross bike in their daily life without much concern for speed and without stress!

Personally, I feel that the ARIES, which uses the same frame as the MISTRAL DISC but with thicker tires and fewer gears, is a better fit for city use. Thicker tires are easy to customize later, and fewer gears can reduce mechanical problems.

And this year (2026), a new color, "LIGHT BLUE," has been added to the ARIES lineup!
