Although "cross bike" is a single term, it's a bicycle category with a wide range and many options...
Price, design, brand... they look somewhat different...
I've heard people say that even after getting advice from knowledgeable friends, they were told, "All cross bikes are pretty much the same anyway."
Our store has been selling cross bikes for many years, and honestly, I think a surprisingly large number of people feel that "they're all the same." Even I often don't notice the differences unless I thoroughly test ride them.
Nevertheless, each manufacturer tries to create the best cross bike they can think of within a "limited budget"...
And for those eagerly anticipating their first cross bike, it's a bit sad to hear, "They're all the same, so anything is fine!"
As bicycle shop staff, if possible, we want you to be particular when choosing!
This time, I'd like to introduce the key points I consider when choosing a cross bike for myself!
What is a Cross Bike?
A cross bike is the most suitable type of sports bicycle for urban use.

It's a model that combines the best aspects (crossing over performance) of road bikes and MTBs (mountain bikes).
The advantage of a road bike is that it can travel fast and for long distances on paved roads. Conversely, its disadvantage is that it's quite difficult to ride on gravel roads or sandy areas like riverbanks.
MTBs, on the other hand, feature thick tires that can handle unpaved roads. Some models also have suspension for excellent riding comfort! However, they are not good at achieving high speeds on paved roads.
A cross bike, which sits in between, can handle rougher terrain better than a road bike and is better at riding on paved roads than an MTB. Conversely, it's slower than a road bike and less capable on rough terrain than an MTB.
In that sense, it's suitable for commuting, school, and city riding, making it the easiest model for sports bicycle beginners to start with.
No more, no less than the necessary specs!
First, regarding price, whether it's "penny wise and pound foolish" or "over-spec," if the rider is satisfied, then it was the right choice.
However, it's difficult to find something you'll be satisfied with before purchasing, and you might want to research the specs you need and their market prices, but "summary articles" and "online shops" don't provide this information...
● What are the specs you need and their market prices?
"As a substitute for a mama-chari (city bike)"... I usually find a mama-chari sufficient, and I like the design of cross bikes! (Market price: around 30,000 yen)

It's okay to choose based on price and design! Unless it's a poor quality product, many online shops offer models with perfectly adequate specs, and from what I've researched, there should be no problem! However... please note that when purchasing from an online shop, the bicycle may often not be assembled!
"I want to make my 5km to 10km one-way commute or school trip more comfortable and economical"... A mama-chari is a bit tough... I wish I could be a bit more comfortable... (Market price: up to 50,000 yen)

Personally, I think this class is the most difficult to find... This is because recently, even unknown manufacturers have been selling "proper cross bikes" at economical prices. Therefore, specialized knowledge is required to identify a "proper cross bike."
If I had to say, "8 or more rear gears" is the minimum to aim for... This is because online shops often write "Shimano-made," but even mama-charis use Shimano products... In fact, non-Shimano derailleurs are rarer. Shimano develops products where "6-speed is for light vehicles," "7-speed is for light vehicles and sports," and "8-speed is for sports," so 8-speed is a safe bet. And adopting 8-speed suggests that the manufacturer is targeting users with a certain level of knowledge, which gives us an expectation. While it's not absolute, it should help narrow down the choices.
"I want to make my 5km to 10km one-way commute or school trip even more comfortable"... Since I'm getting a cross bike, I want to enjoy my commute and school trips too! (Market price: 50,000 yen or more)

If it's a well-known brand like GIANT, KhodaaBloom, GIOS, MARIN, BRIDGESTONE, etc., it's generally okay! Of course, there are differences in cost performance and concepts between manufacturers, but I believe you can enjoy sufficient performance for everyday cross bike use!
"I want to ride a cross bike for regular exercise"... I want it for more than just commuting/school, perhaps for weekend cycling to combat lack of exercise! (Market price: 80,000 yen or more)

At this level, models tend to be specialized rather than all-purpose! It's better to research carefully and choose one that matches your specific intended use!
Key points to consider when purchasing
● Frame Material
Bicycle frames are made from many types of materials.
"Steel," "Chromoly," "Aluminum," "Carbon," "Titanium"... etc.

Chromoly |

Aluminum |
*Cases where "carbon" or "titanium" are used for cross bikes are rare high-end materials.
*There are also different grades within each material. If you're interested, please do some research!
For cross bikes, "Chromoly" or "Aluminum" are considered popular materials. "Chromoly" is more durable and superior in vibration absorption, making it recommended for those who want a leisurely ride or carry a lot of cargo.
"Aluminum" is lighter than Chromoly and allows for zippier rides. It's recommended for those who want to ride fast on paved roads.
● Vehicle Weight

While I wouldn't say lightweight is everything, lighter is certainly better.
Mama-charis weigh around 20kg, while high-end road bikes can be under 8kg. Cross bikes typically fall between 10kg and 14kg. Recently, cross bikes with hydraulic disc brakes have become more common, which slightly increases the weight, and specs also play a role.
To aim for a lightweight cross bike under 8kg...
By the way, aiming for a cross bike under 8kg might be a bit challenging.
When it comes to lightweight cross bikes, I think of the "Khodaabloom RAIL 700 Super Light," which has a stock weight of 8.7kg and is said to be the "lightest model in its price range."
To get it under 8kg, you'd have to customize the cockpit (handlebar, saddle, seatpost) and wheels, which is quite a task... it feels like it would be easier and more economical to just buy a road bike instead.💦
● Specs

Above, I said "at least 8 speeds are desirable," but this isn't about desiring it for performance; rather, "if it has 8 speeds, there's a higher chance it's a reliable cross bike."
While specs can be important when choosing a bicycle, if it's your first cross bike, there's no need to be overly nervous.
However, it is recommended to pay attention to braking performance. Since cross bikes tend to go faster than mama-charis, braking performance is important.
Rim brakes (V-brakes) are the most popular for cross bikes, but recently, many models also feature hydraulic disc brakes, which offer excellent stopping power and are highly recommended!
● Size Selection

Unlike mama-charis, cross bikes measure the appropriate size by "frame size" rather than "tire size." And just like fitting shoes, riding is possible even if it's "slightly too big/small," but it's not suitable for intense sports.
To put it in detail, considering height/arm and leg length/flexibility/core strength, it gets complicated, but it's ideal to choose a size that allows for easy adjustment later rather than picking a size that's just barely right.
Also, the performance of a sports bicycle changes significantly depending on the fitting (position). For more information on fitting, please consult a specialist store near you!
● Items that need to be purchased separately
Unlike mama-charis, "lights," "locks," "kickstands," "mudguards," and "baskets" are often not standard equipment on cross bikes.
Also, the "valve" for inflating cross bike tires is almost always a "French valve (Presta valve)," unlike mama-charis (Dunlop valve).

Therefore, a tire pump may also be necessary.

Summary of How to Choose a Cross Bike
✔Learn how to choose a bike with just the right specs!
✔Key points to consider: "Frame Material," "Bike Weight," "Specs," "Appropriate Size," "Things You Need to Buy Together"

When we introduce cross bikes in detail, we sometimes hear comments like, "All cross bikes are the same."
If it's simply for transportation, that might be true.
However, having sold cross bikes for many years, we advocate for "a commitment to cross bikes!"
Cross bikes are not just a means of transportation; they are an entry model for activity rides!
With performance, price, and design diversifying, we encourage you to carefully consider the one that's right for you!
Bonus
Thank you for reading this article to the end! As an addendum, here's an introduction to the best value cross bike this season!
The price of the Cross Line 30R series from the German-based bicycle brand "CENTURION" has been revised, making it quite a bargain!
While CENTURION isn't a widely known brand in Japan, it's a reliable brand that Eirin has carried for quite some time!
It's a brand that originally excelled in MTBs. Currently, in its home country, it's focusing on E-BIKES! In Japan, E-BIKE popularity is still low, which might be why it's heard less often. However, it's a popular brand in its home country of Germany, so you can rest assured!
And now, this cross bike has become quite a bargain. Although it has fewer gears than popular cross bikes (3x7 speed specification), it incorporates many SHIMANO components, features a high-quality frame, and comes standard with a kickstand! I believe its cost performance is top-notch!
