Reasons for the new ESCAPE R3's unpopularity online

The interpretation that "the price increased and the specs decreased compared to the previous model" seems to be the reason for its unpopularity.

For users who want good quality products at low prices, I can certainly understand why they would want to insist on this reason.

However, while it is true that "the price increased and the specs decreased compared to the previous model," I believe this statement is misleading.

First, the "previous model" being compared is the "ESCAPE R3 LTD," a model that Giant offered for a limited-time sale.Users who consider the sale price as the previous model are saying "it's more expensive!" The question here is, isn't it natural for the regular price to be higher than a sale item (special price)?
*2023 regular price ¥79,200 (tax included) ⇒ 2023 sale price ¥59,400 (tax included) ⇒ 2024 regular price ¥66,000 (tax included)

And while it's true that the specs have been downgraded, I want you to question the cost-performance. The price has been lowered to reflect the spec downgrade.

Indeed, compared to ESCAPE R3 models from before 2020, cost performance may have declined due to rising prices, but it cannot be said that it has poor cost performance compared to cross bikes of the same price range from other brands.

I share the same regret that the ESCAPE R3, a model that has led Japan's cross bike market, has undergone a minor change.

However, I believe that the 2024 ESCAPE R3 has re-evaluated and optimized the balance between "price and performance" for people who need a cross bike!

2024 ESCAPE R3 Frame Design

The 2024 ESCAPE R3 has undergone a major renewal, and the frame molding in particular differs significantly from the 2023 model.

▲2023 ▲2024

The frame molding up to the 2023 model had an exquisite balance of "vibration absorption," "lightness," and "rigidity," boasting high performance that other cross bikes in the same price range couldn't match...

Unfortunately, the new 2024 model adopts a popular and simple round tube shape.

There are no major changes in the frame design (geometry).

The front fork has been changed from chromoly to Hi-ten Steel.

Due to the changes in frame molding and fork, the bike's weight also increased by 0.4kg (10.7kg ⇒ 11.1kg).

Changes in 2024 ESCAPE R3 Parts

●Color change of assembled parts

▲2023

▲2024

Silver parts were used for the handlebars, stem, seat post, crank, brakes, etc., but these have been changed to black parts.

Recently, cross bikes that use black are popular.

Personally, I feel it's a bit of a waste, as there are few cross bikes that use silver. Many people seem to prefer black, so it's a matter of taste!

●Tire width change

Tire width increased from 30c to 32c.

●Stem angle change

▲2023

▲2024

It's very subtle, but the angle has slightly increased.

The headset standard has also changed, and the stem angle has increased, allowing the handlebar position to be higher than before.

●Saddle change

2023 "GIANT CONNECT COMFORT" ⇒ 2024 "GIANT SPORT".

The 2023 model featured a unique "UNICLIP" standard and a highly cushioned saddle, but the 2024 model features a more common cross-bike saddle.

●Grip change

The 2023 model's grips featured ergonomic lock-on grips, designed to reduce strain on the palms and prevent grip slippage. The 2024 model, however, has switched to more standard grips.

●Abolition of skewer nuts

Up until the 2023 model, "skewer nuts" were used to secure the wheels, requiring tools for removal and attachment. However, the 2024 model adopts the popular quick-release system.

This is a welcome change for those who frequently remove and attach wheels for transport, but for those who rarely do so, it will be necessary to check that the wheels are securely fastened.

Some changes are not about cost reduction through detuning, but rather minor modifications.

Nevertheless, it feels like they sought out points that potential cross bike buyers wouldn't particularly mind (things that wouldn't become disadvantages) and made changes accordingly.

Summary of 2024.ESCAPE R3

Production costs reduced to the absolute minimum necessary specifications
User-friendly pricing
◎Reproducing affordability over high specs ⇒ Still great value for money◎

The ESCAPE R3, a model that has led the cross bike market, has unfortunately become unpopular online.

It's not being compared to "cross bikes of the same price range from other brands," but to its former self... a dilemma truly faced by an ace.

The cost performance of its "frame performance," "parts configuration," and "price" is excellent, though💦

While it's perfectly normal to decide against a purchase because of negative online reviews, please do consider the ESCAPE R3 as one of your options!
